RetroArch FAQ
Is RetroArch an emulator? Is it free? Does it run on Windows 11? Does it ship ROMs? Why does antivirus flag it? Plain answers below.
No. RetroArch is a frontend for Libretro cores. The core is the emulator, engine or media program. RetroArch is the menu, input, video, audio and updater around it.
A core is a program ported to the Libretro API. Examples on the public list include Snes9x Next, Gambatte, PCSX ReARMed, Flycast, LRPS2, OpenLara and DOSBox Pure.
Yes. License is GNU GPLv3. The 1.21.0 release text says the team does not add in-app ads, monetization SDKs or paywalled features.
Yes. Docs cover Windows 7, 8, 8.1, 10 and 11. Android needs 5.0 or later. macOS, Linux and iOS are listed on the official site.
Use Slang when the video driver is Vulkan, Direct3D 10/11/12 or OpenGL Core. Use GLSL on many OpenGL and mobile builds. Cg is deprecated. Presets end in .slangp or .glslp.
Match RetroArch version, core and ROM CRC. Hosts usually forward TCP 55435. Some cores do not netplay well. Genesis Plus GX, Snes9x and FCEUmm appear often in community tests.
Official notes say store versions sometimes have to follow platform rules, so they can differ from the website build.
No. The Android listing states that clearly. You provide content you have the right to use. This site will not point you at ROM archives.
GPLv3 governs the frontend. Cores have their own licenses. Game data remains under whatever copyright applies to that data. Read legal usage.
The source is public under GPLv3. Users still see antivirus false positives on cores and nightlies. Verify hashes from the package you chose. Details sit on Is RetroArch safe.
Heuristic scanners often flag emulator cores. A maintainer reply on a public thread said the project does not pay whitelist fees. Prefer 1.22.2 stable if nightlies keep disappearing.
